What are braces?

Braces give you a way to align your teeth by keeping pressure on them over time. Your orthodontist cements brackets to each of your teeth and threads a wire through them. Your braces are tightened regularly and may also include metal or rubber bands that help shift your teeth in the correct direction toward better alignment.

The Newport Dental team strategically plans your treatment with braces and has options for phased or comprehensive treatment. Phased orthodontic treatment happens in two steps.

The first phase happens while your child still has their baby teeth and can correct or prevent any impending bite problems. Phase two, which often includes braces, works with your child’s permanent teeth.

Comprehensive treatment is the better option for children and young adults who already have all or most of their permanent teeth. It happens in just one phase, and braces are the most common mode. Invisalign® is an alternative option.

Metal Brackets

Metal brackets are the traditional option and the most commonly used. While they may stand out, they’re low maintenance compared with other choices.

Clear Brackets

Clear brackets are made of ceramic and blend in with the natural color of your teeth because they’re transparent. They’re less durable than metal braces, and they can stain, so you need to take a little extra care with them.
