What Happens During a Professional Dental Cleaning?
A professional dental cleaning — sometimes called a prophylaxis — goes far beyond what brushing and flossing can accomplish at home. Our dental hygienists carefully scale away hardened tartar (calculus) from above and below the gumline, polish each tooth to remove surface stains, and apply fluoride to strengthen enamel. For patients with early signs of gum disease, we also offer deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) to stop periodontal problems before they progress.
Your dental exam is equally important. Dr. Dang checks for cavities, cracks, worn fillings, and signs of oral cancer during every visit. We also evaluate your bite, jaw joints, and gum health. Combined with digital X-rays, this thorough approach gives us a complete picture of your oral health — and gives you peace of mind.

Scheduling & Pre-Visit Prep
When you call to schedule, our front desk team will confirm your name, date of birth, and whether we are billing insurance or you are paying out of pocket. For cash-paying patients, we will walk you through our in-house membership plan and pricing so there are no surprises. We confirm your preferred contact number, book a date and time, and send your new-patient paperwork electronically so you can complete it before your visit. Once your insurance is verified, we will let you know if there are any copays ahead of time.
Doctor Exam & Periodontal Charting
A doctor will make an introduction and check any concerns before starting. Next is a review of your X-rays with you right there on the screen so you can see exactly what he sees. Your dental assistant charts any existing dental work, takes periodontal measurements around each tooth, and notes any areas that may need treatment. If anything is found, the doctor will explain the findings in plain language and walk you through your options before moving forward.
Professional Teeth Cleaning
The doctor will begin the cleaning using a piezo cavitron, an ultrasonic scaler that breaks up tartar and plaque with gentle vibrations while the assistant helps with suction to keep you comfortable. After the scaling is complete, your assistant helps finish the cleaning by polishing your teeth to remove surface stains and flossing between each tooth. The final step is a fluoride rinse to strengthen your enamel. You will want to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the rinse so the fluoride has time to absorb. We then clean you up, collect the bib and sunglasses, and walk you back to the front desk.
Check-In & Digital X-Rays
When you arrive at our Factoria office, we will greet you and ask for a copy of your photo ID and insurance card for our records. Your dental assistant will call you back and start with a panoramic X-ray, which gives us a full view of your teeth, jaw, and bone structure. From there, you will be seated in the operatory for a set of comprehensive bitewing and periapical X-rays that show the details between and around each tooth. Your assistant will ask what brings you in today and what you would like to address, then get you comfortable with a dental bib and patient sunglasses while we prepare for the exam.

Teeth Cleaning & Exam FAQs
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
The American Dental Association recommends a professional cleaning and exam every six months for most adults and children. If you have gum disease, a history of heavy tartar buildup, or certain medical conditions like diabetes, our doctors may recommend cleanings every three to four months. During your visit at Newport Dental, we will recommend a schedule that fits your specific oral health needs.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of your teeth and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning — also called scaling and root planing — goes further, cleaning bacteria and tartar from deep periodontal pockets and smoothing the tooth roots so gums can reattach. Deep cleaning is recommended when gum disease has progressed beyond gingivitis. Our Factoria dental team will let you know which type you need after your exam.
Does teeth cleaning hurt?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during a routine cleaning. You may feel slight pressure or sensitivity around the gumline, especially if there is significant tartar buildup. For deep cleanings, we use a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. If you have dental anxiety, let us know — we will work at your pace and check in with you regularly.
How much does a dental cleaning cost without insurance?
The cost of a dental cleaning varies depending on whether you need a standard prophylaxis or a deep cleaning. At Newport Dental, we accept most major dental insurance plans and offer affordable self-pay rates. Contact our Factoria office for current pricing, and ask about our new-patient specials. We believe cost should never be a barrier to preventive care.
What should I expect during my first dental exam at Newport Dental?
Your first visit includes a comprehensive exam with digital X-rays, an oral cancer screening, a gum health evaluation, and a full teeth cleaning. Our dentists will review your dental history, discuss any concerns, and create a personalized treatment plan. The entire appointment typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. We are located in Factoria and welcome new patients from Bellevue, Newcastle, and the surrounding Eastside communities.
Can teeth cleaning remove stains from coffee and tea?
Yes. Professional polishing during your cleaning appointment removes many surface stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco. For deeper or more stubborn discoloration, we also offer professional teeth whitening services at our Factoria office. Ask your hygienist which option is right for you.
